First, if you have never heard of this device you are in for a treat. Google it, I can't do it justice, but let me try. This particular interface was babied and only ridden to church on Sundays by a little on lady. Not far from the truth! First, to be clear, it uses a Firewire interface. If you have an older Apple you are in good shape, I used a Mac Mini and a large Apple "Cheese Grater." You can also get a card for a Windows based PC. No big deal. Now, what can this thing do for me?
Start with a Sound on Sound article:
https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/focusrite-liquid-saffire-56
Then consider this:
Sample rate: 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz
It is called 56 for a reason, lots and lots of I/O. First, it has 8 really good mic-pres. But the first 2 channels can be controlled by a Focusrite piece of software that is amazing:
Focusrite software: https://customer.focusrite.com/en/support/downloads?brand=focusrite&product_by_range=407&download_type=all
This does two VERY important things. First, it give you control over the first two channels. There is a mic-pre emulator where you can emulate/model some amazing vintage mic-pres like the famous Telefunken/Neumann V72 and 10 other ones! It also has 2 ADAT interfaces. I ran an additional 16 channels of mic-pres over ADAT using a Focusrite Octo-Pre Platinum. There there is S/PDIF input so 2 more mic-pres can be added! So I was running 26 mics in. Then there is output, S/PDIF stereo out (I used them for monitors) and then 2 ADATS out. I used this to drive monitors for the musicians.
But the part of the software that blew me away was the MixControl software. VERY powerful. I put in a screenshot in the pictures. You can build 16 DIFFERENT mixes for 16 different outputs. 8 outputs are on the back as Line Level or you can do like me and send them 8 to an ADAT to be converted by an ADAT enabled D/A. I used a Focusrite 26 I/O. There there is a MIDI input and then there is a BNC for a block source like a Big Ben!
Also, (are you ready for this?) you can even do 24/96 on the ADAT if you have an ADAT box on the other end that can handle it. It takes both ADAT lines (because ADATA is limited to 8 channels of24/48) but add the two together, like using the Focusrite Octo-Pre Platinum, and you get 8 more channels of 24/96. Unbelievable! ,600 new, going for a bargain rate.
I took very good care of this. I moved to a different platform (Allen and Heath Sq5) so I could match, but this is still a killer
I have the original shipping box. Will double box.
